Imperial Oil Limited - Environmental Compliance Approval (waste)

This proposal is to amend Environmental Compliance Approval (waste disposal) No. A030105 for the Imperial Sarnia Manufacturing Site Landfill, a 23.884-hectares property with a landfill area of 11.5 hectares situated at 536 Scott Road in Sarnia, Ontario.

The landfill is approved to receive solid non-hazardous waste generated at the Imperial refinery and chemical plant in Sarnia, Ontario. The operations of the landfill have been relatively unchanged since the 1960s.

This proposed amendment formalizes the landfill design and operations via the adoption of a recently prepared Design and Operations Plan, as required by Condition 3.8 of Environmental Compliance Approval No. A030105, and reduces the total landfill capacity from the provisionally approved 2,200,000 cubic metres to 1,518,515 cubic metres. The landfill footprint was determined to be 11.5 hectares, marginally larger than the approved 9 hectares; however, the landfill footprint remains fully within the landfill property and will not change under continued operation. The landfill is surrounded by Imperial property on three sides and by other industrial properties to the west. The hours of operation are 24 hours per day as needed by Imperial.
